Mavic Axle Adaptors – which adaptor do I need : Road and Gravel wheels

This guide considers adaptors for Mavic Road and Gravel Wheels

The two fundamental steps in determing the correct adaptors are ;

(1) Know which wheels you have – that is the exact model and model year

(2) Know what the current and target configuration is.

Lets start with identifying your wheels. The key to this is the serial number which is located on the rim near the valve. (There is no need to remove the tyre )

Depending on the age of the wheel, the serial number will be either a barcode (typically on wheels pre 2018) or etched on the wheel. Examples below.

Mavic Serial Number Barcode
Mavic Serial Number

Sometimes , particularly on older wheels, the serial number is illegible. If you have a matching wheelset, then check the other wheel , if that is legible then you can use that (we are just trying to identify the wheel model and model year as a key to getting the build details from the Mavic Support site so either serial number is fine for this purpose)

If both serial numbers are illegible (or you cannot find the serial numbers) drop me a query on the Mavic Tech Forum.  I check this most days.

Okay so once we have the serial number the next step is to input this into the Mavic Tech Site

This should then provide an exploded diagram showing the build specification of the wheels.

We need to obtain the model year of the wheels – to do this click the “Download PDF” link  (arrowed in image below), this will open up the relevant page in the technical documentation with the model year in the top right hand corner (arrowed in image below)

So in the example above we have identified the wheel as a 2020 Mavic Ksyrium UST Disc Front Wheel

Now we have the model and year we can go on to the other fundamental requirement which is current and target configuration.

Typically for road and gravel wheels this is going to be one of the following ;

Front : Either 12x100mm thru axle, 9x100mm QR or 15x100mm thru axle (some older wheels circa 2015)

Rear : Either 12x142mm thru axle, 9x135mm QR or 12x135mm thru axle (some older wheels circa 2015)

For disc wheels you will also need to note whether they are 6-Bolt or Centrelock.

Okay so once we have that information we can use the Mavic Technical Documentation to determine what we need.

Lets take an example…

So we have identified our wheel as a 2020 Ksyrium Disc. We will assume it is in its default (as new) configuration ie. running a 12x100mm through axle.

Our target configuration is to use the wheels in another frame that is quick release only. (ie. 9x100mm QR)

So we refer to the Mavic Documentation, scroll down the section for Front Wheel, checking the date range and wheel models.

Image below.

We determine that the convert to 9mm QR we need to user adaptor kit V2680301, and these plug into the existing 12mm axle.

Mavic Road Wheel Axle Adaptor Example

There are a few points worth noting when referencing the Mavic Road Wheels Adaptor Document ;

(1) Use the “Looks Like” column to confirm your wheel model. This is particularly important if the wheel is circa 2017 / 2018 as Mavic made rolling spec changes across this timeframe, so you should do a visual check.

(2) Be aware that many wheels will use adaptors in their default (as new) configuration.  Often its then a case of removing these and replacing them with different ones to change the axle configuration.

As always if you are not sure what adaptors you need, or just want a sanity check, drop us a query on the Mavic Tech Forum. We check it daily.
