Changing Mavic Freehubs

The ID360 design makes it straightforward to switch free hubs. Typically it’s a tool-free process ; pull off the drive side axle adaptor and remove the cassette, and the freehub body should just slide off the axle.

Mavic, of course, offer the full range of freehub standards ; Shimano HG, SRAM XD and XDR, Shimano Microspline, and Campagnolo (including N3W)

Now whilst fitting the freehub body is straightforward, it’s important to consider the implications for the rear drive side axle adaptor.

From around mid-2018 the vast majority of Mavic Rear Wheels (Road, Gravel and MTB) have used either the V2510701 or V3811001 adaptor.

If you are switching from Shimano HG to either SRAM XD/XDR , Microspline or Campagnolo then you will need to change the drive side adaptor.

So first thing to confirm is which adaptor do your wheels use.  For this use our guides ; Road and Gravel, or MTB

If your wheel is using the V2510701 adaptor, then the key thing to appreciate is that the drive side adaptor is a two-piece item. With both pieces in situ, it looks like a top hat. Using this analogy, the “rim” is removable.  When using a Shimano HG (or SRAM HG) freehub body the “rim” piece needs to be in place. However for Microspline, SRAM XD/XDR and Campagnolo this rim needs to be removed.

The diagram below should help make this clear. For clarity the same approach applies when switching from Shimano HG to Shimano Microspline.

Now if your wheels have the  V3811001 adaptors, then the approach is different.

These adaptors are machined from one piece of alloy and hence do not come apart.  The V3811001 adaptor kit includes three parts.  One adaptor for the non-drive side, and two for the drive side. The two adaptors for the drive side have measurements stamped on them. The larger adaptor which has the flared dust protector is marked 26mm, and the small cylindrical adaptor is marked 21mm.  When switching from Shimano HG freehub to XD/XDR/Microspline/Campagnolo you need to use the smaller cylindrical piece marked 21mm.

A photo of the V3811001 kit with the 21mm part arrowed is shown below.
